That hanging thing

Post by Anonymous »

Just wondering if someone could clarify the meaning of the hanging, straightjacket-thing that is seen in the cutscene when you enter the 1st floor lobby, 2nd Apartment World after finding the 6 other bound bodies. I thought it must be symbolic of walter's father in some way when I first saw it, but now I'm not so sure.

It's meant to represent Walter's father, and it's also an homage to a particular artist whom I always forget the name of...someone will come along and post it soon.

Yep it´s Walter father. The lying thing doesn´t have a face because he doesn´t remeber it. The only thing that he remebers about his father face is the glasses and the long nose (which you can see in an abstarct way). I saw a still pic of his father on a forgotten website and it was like that (when Henry grabs the umbilical cord and he has those flashbacks).

The artist name....forgot it too. I think Glazarus was the one who knew his name.

I thought it looked like adult Walter, representing how the words of his father effected him- ie leaving him emotionally bound and in a foetal position even as an adult.

The picture's a bit dark, but you can make it out. Is it just me or does it almost have breasts? I know that doesn't at all fit into the bit of it representing his father, but.. well. Boobs: yea or nay? It's a little hard to tell.

Oh, that thing! My mistake, I was talking about the other things you had to find. I'd completely forgotten about this.

Interesting. It reminds me alot of the strange beak-like masks the plague doctors wore in the outbreak of 1665. Given the Pyramid Head - Execuitioners Mask link there could be a relationship here with the mysterious plagues that struck Silent Hill at various times.

I guess I'm the only one who thought that those plagues were of a mental illness, and not a physical one. There's no in game evidence that points towards one or the other, but I always assumed since they said Brookhaven was built in response to it. I figured that, because Brookhaven acts as a mental institution, that this illness was a mental problem: people seeing monsters no one else could see, and seeming to exist in a reality severed from this one completely.

That was random of me. Anyway, I've seen the hanging figure in a photograph by some.. artist before. It was linked before the hack on the forum, and unfortunately I saved neither the link nor the picture so I can't provide more than my word. It might be nothing more than a nod to that artist, or it could be something we're meant to look into. Who knows with these games anymore.

I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in SH2 or 3 that Brookhaven was originally built as a general hospital in response to the plague, and then converted into a specialised Psychiatric Ward when there was no longer the demand for it.

Brookhaven Hospital: Built in response to a great plague following a wave of immigration in 1880.

The hanging woman is also seen in the Spiral Staircase, I believe right at the start, or immediately following the Subway's exit.

Sounds like it'd be more physical. People bringing diseases and all that nice stuff. Hmm.

So it is a woman, then? Or at least the figure itself is female-based. So much for the father business.

It could be female. But if you ask me it's male, and has bitchtits like this guy, http://www.digitalapocalypse.com/pb4.html -this is the artwork you were speaking of? Although it's probley a woman, but feeling in the otherside at the time is of walters father. Lets look at it like this..

Cause: Child Walter says "Dad, i cant see your face, dad?"
Effect: A picture of person with Cone/Pyramid shaped head is found, Henry questions if it's Walters father. And just above it is 'that' picture, but made into flesh.

Just as your current avatar Miss Krissy, is of Eilleen just stepped into the BIG spinny halo, and then 'that' picture is made real, at the end.

Yes, that's the picture I'm talking about! Wee, thank you for posting it.

That's a very good point.. sort of like how Alessa drew pictures of monsters, and those monsters became physical (in her world, at least)?

Yes it was that artwork!! Anyways it´s an influence, doesn´t need to be necessarly identical to the original material, so no need to be a female. I was right! Hooray

Yeah, and thats an even better point Krissy, i dident notice that connection. Could be part of pattern that Alessa and Walter share. Alessa and Walter were both in control of their world, both drawed pictures of things that would happen. Maybe Walter had powers like Alessa, before any rituals took place.

And there is no proof it's male or female Piranha. It doesent have breasts, but it doesent have a penis either.

Well, I think Walter only gained the powers after the ritual. There was nothing particularly special about his birth, he was an orphan that the cult took in, brainwashed, and then later he was used by Jimmy Stone. I think he only got an Alessa-type power when he was much older, so his drawings from childhood could finally be turned into reality. Alessa drew pictures of monsters and after Dahlia tried to sacrifice her, forcing her into a coma and use her powers to construct a fabricated reality, she took those same ideas and made them real. Plus I think some of them were based off of her fears. Either way, we both can agree that Walter's and Alessa's sketching from childhood were made real thanks to their powers.

Still looks like breasts to me: http://www.geocities.com/th765/sh4pc_615.jpg
Again: You can see it better on the Spiral Staircase.

A pic of the staircase one would be great... And it´s hanged to the ceiling by the breasts...makes them larger than the usual...

Anyways:

*When you see it in the staircase, you´re exiting/entering the subway

(supposedly) after that:

*Walter draw something really similiar to what you see in the building world. Krissy said that Alessa, by drawing monster, they would´ve become real. Right?

Question: Do the drawings have an instant action in the other world? After you draw it, *blink* the weird as shit monster appears? Never played SH1, so excuse my ignorance...
