It doesn't look like anything that will revolutionize the horror gaming world, but it looks like a competent remake of a classic horror game. I wonder if all of the preorder bonuses will be available for preordering the physical version as well. I am a little disappointed that there isn't like a "collector's edition" of the game with some physical goodies.
The chart suggests that you get the dog and robbie masks as part of the physical pre-order.

Pre-ordering the physical copy likely gets you a DLC code on your receipt or given to you when you pick up the game.

Only the Deluxe Edition is digital-only. And anyone who pre-pays for the digital deluxe edition also gets extra stuff, plus gets to play it 2 days before release date.

The Robbie heads are only for PS5 pre-orderers, physical or digital, they are not available for PC, though I suppose someone can always mod them in.

I'm personally not going to bother pre-ordering, as I don't think I'll even have a PS5 by this time yet, but I'm hoping that Konami will put out a physical version of the Art Book through Dark Horse or something.

Klimat wrote: 01 Jun 2024I have an elaborate idea on why Maria's outfit could have been changed. I can of cause be completely wrong, but hear me out :).

From the latest trailer we've learned First-Aid Kits were cut from the Remake while Ampoules were replaced with Syringes. And the reason for that obviously is the new healing animations added to the game and their technical requirements. Due to gameplay needs healing animations have to be fast like drinking a potion or injecting self with a syringe. Both actions can only take a second to perform, so you can be healed almost immediately (possibly in a middle of combat) and then continue doing what you were doing. First-aid kits simply do not fit into this paradigm, the animation would have to include opening said kit, taking something out of it that is not a health drink or a syringe (those would be redundant), so something like a bandage, that would have to have some kind of an application animation itself bandaging an arbitrary body part... that is simply too long and complicated, it can not work gameplay-wise.

So what if they had to change Maria's outfit for a similar reason, because in the Remake it had to perform a specific function impossible to do with the classic costume. Silent Hill games are often compared to Resident Evil, so let's take a look at a recent Remake from that franchise, namely Resident Evil 4. You see, in RE4R there is also an NPC character who tags alone with the protagonist and has to be protected, her name is Ashley Graham and her costume was as well seemingly changed in the REmake compared to the original, and yet it was later revealed that in the middle of the game Ashley has a costume change by losing her jacked revealing her classic outfit that was underneath all along.
Image
So I wonder if Bloober wanted to pull something similar with Maria. Obviously with the classic costume it is impossible to remove any of her clothing without leaving Maria half naked, but with the new redesigned look she can easily lose her jacket revealing the dress at a strategic moment (like her Labyrinth jail cell scene) for extra seduction points. I think it's a plausible theory.
I like the way you think! :)

I'm guessing the more demure Maria is precisely putting it on thick, until the switch is finally flicked and there's a big about-turn moment precisely to heighten the mood across from the prison cell that this woman ain't who you initially thought she was. Maybe her clothes even change entirely by the time you arrive at Heaven's Night.

My thought is she is wearing her original outfit when we first encounter her on the pier. Then she changes to a more modest outfit when we get to heavens night. That would explain why we only see her in this new outfit in the trailer. Because it is after heavens night she would have changed already.
Jut my theory though..

One neat edit that's a lot more inline with classic Maria. You can see the stark contrast of how to perceive the two.

The second one just looks out of place. In the original it at least looked like a outfit someone would wear, that looks like a SH2 porn parody :D . I dig her new look, it's still polar opposite to Mary's plain Jane look. It reminds me of the old concept art Abit.

I have a lot of reservations about how the Silent Hill 2 Remake is going to pan out, to be honest. But it's quality is not going to depend on how similar the character models look to the PS2 originals. It's honestly quite silly to get so caught up in the fact that character models in 2024 based on completely different actors don't look the same as character models from 2001. Getting caught up in Angela having a slightly rounder face is especially tacky. We are better than this.

That aside, so Eddie is the only major character we haven't seen yet, right? I really think Eddie is going to be a secret make or break element for me because getting the balance just right is very delicate. Despite the "fanbase" completely missing the point most of the time when they just openly make fat jokes about him (haha pizza yes very funny), the original SH2 walked a very expertly crafted line of showing the trauma of growing up being bullied for your weight and how it warps your self-image and feelings towards the world, while also still being very directly critical for how Eddie chose to handle it. Like all of them, Eddie is a complex character. But because the fanbase doesn't really engage with his story as much as the others, if there's going to be a real "they don't get it" moment for me, it'll probably come from Eddie first.

Technically, that's correct. However, in the combat trailer, James opens a door that does have a man who appears to be sitting on the ground and his head turns slightly. This is probably the bathroom scene.

I discovered this thanks to reddit but Maria's new outfit is eerily similar to one of the original concept arts for the game. Angela seems to be more in line with the concept art in this version too.
With Ito and Akira working with the team, i wonder how much of it is a case of we couldn't/didn't get to do this in the original, lets do it now.

The team members that worked on the character designs were Sato and his team at SATO WORKS. Character modeling was done by Shingo Yuri and his group. But Ito was also designing and modeling monsters, so maybe they shared more information among each other.

I always found it interesting how Eddie's clothing choice is very juvenile. An ill-fitting rather childish looking shirt and the backwards cap.

I get that lots of guys who aren't kids or teens anymore still do the backwards hat thing, but I always felt it was striking how much Eddie looked like an overgrown child in many ways.

Well I usually do the backwards cap to keep the sun off my neck. But yeah it's the combination of the hat with the striped shirt and shorts that help emphasize the caricature of a child in an adult body, especially since the clothes don't fit, even the cap barely fits, hinting at the fact that he has outgrown them, but still wants to remain as an adolescent, an exhibition of immaturity typical of asocial people which is a coping strategy due to bullying. The outfit also has a whimsy of the Tweddle Dee/Dum twins from Alice in Wonderland.

Yeah it's the backwards cap in correlation with the ill fitting outfit, which definitely has some Tweedle Dum vibes, or just your generic adolescent boy outfit like you'd imagine 20th century kids wearing.

As a gas station attendant, Eddie wearing a cap makes sense, especially backward: keeps hair out of the face and sun off the neck.

I wear my cap backwards too. It's only in tandem with everything else that the backwards hat excels the child like appearance of Eddie. A lot of it has to do with his posture too on top of the clothing.

I just thought Eddie's outfit looked like the average 90's "kid" outift. For some reason it always reminded me of the Skater Boy from Tomb Raider 1996.

I think it's impossible to wear a backwards cap at any age without looking at least somewhat immature, but that's just me and my own biases I suppose. *shrugs*

If you live in the American South like I do, people wear caps all the time because of the sun, usually moving the cap back ans forth depending on the circumstances. Or to keep your sweaty hair out your face when your doing hard labor. It's not all about fashion, which is still fine(who cares), but can be practical a lot of times.

I'd been thinking about Angela's new model again, and I think I can finally sum up why I'm not feeling it.

It's that the model looks young, whereas the original Angela looks older.

Angela's age is 19.

Original Angela, actually looks much older. Almost late 20's. So you get the feeling of someone young inhabiting an older body, somewhat similar to Eddie, but as opposed to a look of immaturity, Angela looks mature. Thematically, it is the feeling of a very young girl who was forced to 'grow up' before she was ready; a result of abuse done to her.

The Remake model looks and comes off as younger than 19. If I had to randomly guess just from her face, without knowing who the character is, I would've said she was probably a 16 year old girl.

Angela absolutely does not look like a 16-year-old.

Image

This is Angela and an Adobe stock photo of a 16-year-old girl. Sure, Angela looks younger, but she doesn't look like a child.

The original Angela also looks and sounds older because Donna Burke was 37 when SILENT HILL 2 was released.
