I was playing my second time trough the game today and I noticed that Maria's what I believe used to be a tatoo now is like a scar... might this be cause of Pyramid Head killing her the first or second time? Im shocked and I dont know if my info is correct but I belive it used to be a butterfly tatoo and now its like a scar caused by a spear or maybe a knife.

Edit: Btw, if this has anything to do with another ending or even Maria's scenario just point this out and dont tell me why, thanks

I have found a picture of her Butterfly tattoo. I haven't found anything looking like, or any site mentioning, it is a scar.

It IS a butterfly tattoo. Actually there are 2 butterflies but you can only see a small part of the second one since it is covered by her skirt.

There is a production design of Maria wearing different clothes where you can see that there are even more butterflies on the back of her left leg.

Hmm....chicken and egg over-analysis time....


Did the Mary-Boss send Maria as an "attack" against James just like she sends her other moths/butterflies against him in the boss-fight?

Or did the Mary-Boss use butterflies/moths as an attack against James in order to remind him of Maria.

Actually in 3 of 4 cases the "Mary-boss" in the end IS Maria. She just looks like Mary. Only in the "Maria" ending the final boss is Mary. In the "Leave", "In Water" and "Rebirth" Ending you fight Maria in the end.

Butterflies are a symbol of rebirth and after all Maria is some kind of bizarre "rebirth" of Mary. A being created by the town out of James' and Mary's memories, looking and (sometimes) acting like Mary, you could call her a "rebirth" of Mary.
So Maria has the butterfly tattoos and in the final boss fight she sends moths (which are butterflies too) to attack James.

Butterflies are also supposed to be beautiful on the outside, but on the inside they're all icky.

Like Maria.

I don't know if that is the case so much but I get your point, Maria appears beautiful but isn't so, however it is not as if she is actually evil, rather she does not have her own will to act upon but acts upon the will of Silent Hill.

The butterflies signifying rebirth is the most viable explaination.

Mary = caterpillar
Death = coccoon
Maria = butterfly

So what is the role of the moths in relation?
They seem to be a symbol of death, right...?

Wow amazing... never thought about it that way. I thought it was a scar because when she dies the second time (in the jail or prison room) by apparently some head problem, the camera goes down and goes to the part close to the supossed "tatoo" but I only saw a scar like with "X" form instead the butterfly tatoo, and I figured it would had to do something with Pyramid Head killing her with a spear right there or something I dont know... and the tatoo covering it, like meaning that James couldnt realize she was already dead... well this doesnt make sence at all but was my first fast thought, anyway my eyes must have tricked me and the butterfly/moth theory works preety good for me

Also, that spear is way too huge to cause that teeny of a mark.

I always thought butterflies were a sign of good luck or good fortune, while moths were a sign of bad luck and bad fortune... I thought that's why those black moths were surrounding Maria/Mary during the last boss fight... Hmm...

As I said, my eyes did trick me, anyway thanks for clarifiying it. About the theory of Maria dying of a headache I read it in this forum, cant remember wich post exactly tho. In my own opinion I would prefer the idea she was just a ghost or some tormented soul destined to keep dying at Silent Hill or something like that. Of course thats my opinion only.
