now I am for SURE this has been covered before (or I would be surpirsed if it hasn't) but I wasn't able to find a direct link or it where I was looking for it...

So here is my question.

What are everyone's theories on the Cults religion.

Do you feel it is based off of a Wiccan/pagan ideal with the Runes/Karma/etc

or perhaps it is a form of perverted christianity.

I know it must have influences from all over the place, and my personal feelings lean towards a mix of the pagan and christian, especially pagan with its sometimes hazy gray area when it comes to morality (morality is much more subjective in pagan religions)

Yeah. Juuust throwing that out there.

When I first started playing SH 1, I thought it was perverted Christianity...then SH 3 came out with all it's pretty colored gods and what not...and I'm all thrown for a loop.

I myself am pagan, and there is nothing wrong with my sense of morality...*grin*

Oh I understand. I was a praciticing wiccan for a while. But I mean in pagan religions morality is more, you know. Karma. Harm others, you get it back threefold, help others, etc.

I personally find it much more freeing etc.

I have seen people refering to the cult religion as something like satanism.

so the god=antichrist.

but I dunno.

I would still go with a really dark perverted paganistic relgion.

I study wicca, and I can totally see the connection between the cult and wicca.
They created god by praying and offered him a reed an snake. Thats very wiccan.
I had never really thought of it before the connection of the two. They also use runes. So Yeah I agree with you and see your point.

There was a native american tribe that was there before settlers, maybe it has some of that mixed in too. In the game they said it was a combination of the different cultures that immigrated there. you've got the irish, chinese, spanish, porte rican, hatian(might be a main one)and so on.

I don't know much about religion but I heard the name Samael being mentioned as the "god" in SH1 and 3 (correct me if I'm wrong) .. Isn't that something with christianity?

Otherwise I must say that they are borrowing alot from different religions for the story of this game.. I don't think you can base it on one of the religions that are active today

Okay. You're wrong. Samael doesn't exist within the realm of Silent Hill--I'm re-writing my explanation as to why this week.

>.. Isn't that something with christianity?
No. Samael is the true name of ha-Satan, meaning poison of God, but it's not of Christian origin.

Its referred to as an 'ancient religion' (or something), which was changed a bit through the influence of the settlers original beliefs (i.e. Christianity).

So, ancient pagan-ish with a topping of christianity...

^ I like that idea. I mean. Christianity borrowed pagan religions (Easter, etc)

I really should start looking into this. Look for a full report within the month! haa..religions really interest me, so this should be fun. See if I can unconver anything we haven't seen before.

Now if I can just got a hold of a copy of Silent Hill....

You dont own SH?
Or do you just mean SH1?

The article about the changing of the religion is in SH3, by the way.

About syncretic religions
There is no religion that has
remained unchanged from the
moment it was founded.
This one is no execption.

When this religion fell into the
hands of immigrants, it was deeply
influenced by their own original
Christian beliefs.

For example, the traditional
representatives of these primal
gods may be given the names and
descriptions of Christian angels.
This shared characteristics being
to appear.

(There is also one rare example
of the chief deity, "Creator of
Paradise" or "Lord of Serpents
and Reeds", being dubbed with
a demon's name. Of course, this
was not done by believers, but
by their opponents.)

Tadaa.

As for the semi-christian influences, I'd reference the angelic names on the doors (Metatron, etc.)...I think I need to start a complete line of research and write a faq on this...hope someone else does it first...damn I'm lazy.

A lot of people already have, but I'm not sure if there's a FAQ yet. I'll get on that after I finish the guide I'm working on now.
