Post subject: Mayan/Aztec References to Obsidian Goblet

Missing since: 06 Jan 2007

If there were any other threads on this that gave anything more than a passing mention on this, i couldn't find any.

Has anyone noticed, along with the continued the language references throughout the game, that the obsidian goblet also has some signifigance to the Maya and the Aztecs? It was a very sacred substance to them, being used both in ceremonial daggers, and to make the swords of the Aztecs holiest warriors, the Jaguar warriors. The Goblet used in Crimson Ceremony is made of obsidian. Thoughts?

Obsidian is also used as a method of divination. People look into slices of obsidian, or bowls made of obsidian and filled with water, in much a similar way as gazing into a crystal ball in order to find answers and guidance. This would make sense in its use as it is one of the relics used to find answers in one of the endings.

As for the Aztec/Maya reference, it's an interesting fact. Perhaps the goblet is meant to represent the ancient religious history of the town. Team Silent have said that it is partly based on Native American teachings, it would make sense to mix a little bit of the Aztecs and the Maya in too. Interesting topic, thanks for posting.

Many ancient cultures used obsidian materials in their rituals and ceremonies. As the above poster mentioned, it was thought that they could be used as a sort of gateway to truth.

mmmmmm...........................
true, but alot of other mostly mayan/aztec features appear in the game, such as:

-sacred weapons: in most aztec societies, all weapons were blessed before battle, and those of great warriors were preserved in displays. although this is also seen in Christianity with the lance of Longinius, it is primarily seen in south american native religions. In the game, you see things like the sword of obedience, which seem to coroborate the connection

-ritual sacrifice: especially in silent hill 4, you see many example of ritual sacrafice. this, the natives of south america don't have an exclusive claim to, but HUMAN sacrifice is banned by almost all eastern religions, and we see plenty with walters 21 sacraments.

-demigods: with the exeption of chritianity, if you consider jesus a demigod, the concept of demigods are almost exclusively reserved to pagan religions, i say this because the greek religions have numerous demigod references, but they are also very prevalent throughout south american native societies as well. Walter at the end of the game could very well be considered one of these

-apocalypse: we derive this very word from the aztec (i think) language, and the native religions around south america are very preachy about it, kinda televangelists today but with much more sway in society.

-pyramids: always places of worship in south american native religions, the steps were steep and difficult to climb, showing the effort the faithful had to exert to get the favor of the gods. With the obvious example of pyramid head, almost all the symbols, the flaurous, the seal of metatron, the halo of the sun, have triangular aspects to them

(please try not to eat me, this is only my third ever post)

This reference could very well be there.
I never noticed it before.
The town at one time was a plantation, and the mayans did grow some similar things that the town was grew. I want to say that it was a pepper or chilly plantation.
Those types of crops were brought in to the us from, spain and spain ruled countries. They earlest settlers could have either been mayan decendents or the white settlers could have taken these decendents as slaves.

Obsidian is used to this day in cardiac surgery because it can be sharpened to molecular thinnes.

also true, though the game usually uses religous references.

Still...........for that reason, it might symbollically represent the heart, but i would think the crimson ceremony book would do a better job of that for obvious reasons

Aren't the names for the cult's deities provided in SH3 Aztec-/Mayan-influenced? I'm thinking in regard to gods such as Quetzalcoatl etc.

I think the Lobsel Vith and Xuchilabara are influenced, but the angelic names, i.e. Samael and Metatron, are Judeo-Christian in nature, although these names in many threads are considered nothing more than figureheads or deceptions

Personally I think the word "Obsidian" is just there to indicate how "old" the cult/spirit of Silent Hill has been around since obsidian used to ancient version of modern day's glasses and mirrors.

Wait wait wait, I am 50% native american, and if they were trying to add in native american teachings i have yet to see one bit of "Coyote" in any of the games... plz do not ask me to explain it because i would have to start up a whole thread to expain Coyote.
