I've been enjoying some of the music created under the banner of "darkjazz" - for me, the bands operating in this field that are most reminiscent of Silent Hill OSTs are Bohren und Der Club of Gore and The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - basically a little bit film noir, a little bit ambient/electronic, heavy mood music. TKDE frequently uses a vocalist who is not SUPER close to Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's sound, but it's a start for those looking for stuff like this that's not instrumental.

That's like Alice in Silent Hill, captures both wonder and the bereft town very well.

Bôa - Duvet (Acoustic)

Bôa - Duvet (Instrumental)

Too bad there are no official instrumental versions of either.

Postal 2 - The Outskirts

I think it's the "Ritual"/"Are you sure?" sample.

In fact, there is a sample at about 2:47 that was used in Silent Hill 2 (at 11, 22, etc in Bed Head).

I was listening to Hybrid Theory from Linkin Park, and for some reason "By Myself" really reminded of two tracks from SH2 soundtrack, I can't recall which of them:

1- The starting riff;
2-the background ambience starting at 0:10:

For a moment I though I was listening to Yamaoka, I'm not kidding.

I checked the fan remixes at silenthllmemories but couldn't find this.

I thought at least the first half had a SH1-esque atmosphere to it.

He is one of my favorites.

Also check out the industrialism and the silk demise.

Wouldn't imagine this in a militaristic game, though Akira did a militaristic piece for one of the later SH games.

Megaman 3 - Whistle Concert (Protoman Theme)

The score about 0:40 mark sounds like the same one used in Not Tomorrow and Promise, and particularly as slow in Not Tomorrow.

The ambience that fades in and out always reminded me of Silent Hill 3

I've noticed that the song/track "Ice" from Silent Hill Shattered Memories, sounds eerily like the track "Radio" from Half Life 2 ost. Listen:

compare it to this:

Both tracks are using the same sample (which originates from THIS sample library.)

Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton's "Sprig" sounds perfectly like something that would have been in P.T., especially the beginning.

Update: Now that I think of it, Emily Haines' voice would perfectly suit the Silent Hill series. The slower, breathier tracks of her Soft Skeleton work sound a lot like McGlynn's work with Yamaoka. Haines' voice is very suited to trip-hop and anything ambient :) Really versatile. Also can't wait for Metric's new album, aha.

Perfect Blue (Japanese anime movie which I highly recommend) has a soundtrack that at some parts is very SH-like, especially the 2 Nightmare tracks.

The song 'Virtual Mima', while not as SH-like in its sound, does create a very uncomfortable ambience. This and the rest of the soundtrack (except for the typical anime pop-songs) i would describe as SH meets Metroid Prime.
