Coins in the BlueCreek Apts...[SPOILERS]

Post by Arthemesic »

What do these represent, the old man, snake and the prisoner(a young woman)
And don't tell me they're the condemned trio, James Eddie and Angela.

^Yeah. I guess it´s just that puzzle riddle you have to solve. Nothing particulary important about it. But someone will come along with a good explanation.

Well since he already ruled out one option, let's see what happens. If a person thinks hard enough they can come up with an explanation for almost any of the riddles (the revolving face in the Labryinth, for example: one face can have many sides (different personalities), or the truth can have many "faces", meaning the different endings and James' take on what happened to Mary VS what really happened, etc.), but that doesn't necessarily mean that the riddles have another meaning.

Funny how a lot of people in other threads say everything in the game has meaning. I never thought about he riddles, tho. It's a good question to figure out if the riddles actually do have some sort of "meaning". Then again if it doesn't, oh well.

I guess it depends on the player.. I think some people get in the habit of analysing that they make an ocean out of a puddle. I wasn't flat out stomping on the idea that they have a purpose, only questioning why they have to have one.

This is true. I've been watching this forum for awhile before I finally joined and it can be a tough crowd here; but I have noticed people making a "mountain out of a mole hill". They read extremely deep into it. Of course I guess this is what this site is for, right?

A forum is for promoting discussion, yes, but that doesn't mean everything needs to have symbolism crammed into it.

And just in case someone's curious.. The Riddle, from Extra Hard Mode, as provided by the now sold-out-to-the-Marines GameFAQs.com. I can't make rhyme or reason out of most of it, only bits.
Like coins in the hazy
aether tossed
Our Souls must by
their sinful weight
Descend to earth
with lightness lost

To "right" the sins
that they hath laid
When thrice in falling they intone
Then Happiness shall be thy own

The first note be not by
the Horned One rung
Though it be there that
all sins be sprung

the Bringer of Life and
the Bringer of Shame
The sins of the latter be
even more tame

Though coming
in the Aged One's wake
The Formless One's soul
in fear doth quake

The Needless One, silent
with hungers all sated
Is least then in sin
with his lusts all abated

For the gravest of sinners
His place be appointed
And if he be lucky
may his soul be anointed

Now, check the coin's themselves. There's more to them than on any other difficulty.

I don't think everything has symbolism. But I think in this case, the three coins should have some kind of symbolism. I mean, when Silent Team came up with these coins, they won't randomly pick oldman, snake, and a prisoner for no reason. Unless they were being lazy and thought "let the fans interpretted their own meaning about these coins"

If we were talking about a Christian context, I'd say something like the old man represents God, the snake Satan, and the woman Eve.

I'm sure that's wrong for many, many reasons, but that's the first thing that struck me when I tried to think of them as symbols.

Think of the woman as a PRISONER, becuase it was mentioned as the "Prisoner coin" or something like that. It DESCRIBES it as a young woman. But good ideas, though

I think everything in this game does.
Why?
Because it's still happening in James' mind.
All the riddles are supposed to be for James and not for Laura or other people.
Chances are his subconsciousness brought up those riddle items to his way.

That’s a good point. The Labyrinth riddle is all about sin and punishment so that certainly means something to the plot.

The garden riddle (in Maria game) is all about the despair of Earnest and his planned resurrection of his dead daughter

What about the music box riddle (it's a riddle on Hard More at least). I don't know what that could mean, except they are all about different women

So the Prisoner is woman, right? That coin would be like Mary.

Snake-coin could be like James sin/s and that Old Man-coin James himself, simple.

Or not..

I agree that the prisoner is mary because she was like a prisoner to her disease and it shows Maria in the prison of the abyss.I think the prisoner could also be Angela maybe since she's like a prisoner to her actions.

I think the snake is james and the old man is Ernest.

Like coins in the hazy
aether tossed
Our Souls must by
their sinful weight
Descend to earth
with lightness lost

The burden of the souls who must descend to Earth with lightness lost are clearly references to the quest for enlightenment that James, Angela and Eddie go through--thus the lightness lost.

To "right" the sins
that they hath laid
When thrice in falling they intone
Then Happiness shall be thy own

Now this is merely a clue that the coins must be positioned in their places - "when thrice in falling they intone, then Happiness shall be they own" meaning: "if you put the coins in their right places then you can open the chest. Also may be because they're alligned from left to right.

The first note be not by
the Horned One rung
Though it be there that
all sins be sprung

This is an allusion to the Devil himself; he won't be the one to bring the sins that James, Angela and Eddie committed, but rather themselves will do this job. Also, it tells us that the Serpent won't be the first coin to be placed in their order. After all, the Serpent is also the Horned One; the Devil as we know from the Bible depicted here in two forms. There's a crescent moon behind the coin, and this must be an allusion to darkness, i.e: "moon - night - darkness" and the Devil has always been associated with darkness, right?

the Bringer of Life and
the Bringer of Shame
The sins of the latter be
even more tame

Yet another reference to God and the Devil (not Silent Hill's God), but yet there's a twist to it: Maria is here referenced; James is the one to bring her into life, but upon realising his crime he'll be in shame, guilt, but yet the "ashamed" one's sins are "even more tame" because James is even more guilty due to his attraction for an entity that is what he really wanted Mary to be. Now understand, I do realise that Mary created Maria as well, but in this case, once again, the allusion is to the fact that Maria is all that James wanted Mary to be. Also, the eggs in the back of the coin are clearly a hint that the "bringer of life" is the Prisoner; therefore, she must be placed to the right side of the other coins.

Though coming
in the Aged One's wake
The Formless One's soul
in fear doth quake

Simply put, this is another reference to where the coins should be. The Serpent coin comes after the Old Man's coin. The fear where the Serpent will tremble with must be a reference to James or Eddie's initial fears in the beginning of the game.

The Needless One, silent
with hungers all sated
Is least then in sin
with his lusts all abated

There's a grave behind the Old Man's coin, suggesting he's dead, thus not having any more "needs", making him then "The Needless One". And if he's is at least then in sin, he must be to the farther left. The reference to the fact that all his lusts "ended", "taken away", is also a hint to where his coin should be, and might be a reference to Angela, who upon realising her sin, accepts her fate and has no more needs.

For the gravest of sinners
His place be appointed
And if he be lucky
may his soul be anointed

To "translate" this, this only means that if we put the sinners in the right order, from the least sinful to the most sinful of them all, with "their places being appointed", the chest will open. But then again, James is also the "gravest of sinners" as shown in the game - also see my references to the Prisoner coin - so if he succeed in his journey, "be lucky", then his soul will be "purified", for the "anointment" means being sanctified in a religious context. Also, it means that the three sinners's souls might find solace in one form or another, just as with James, Angela and Eddie.

That's my theory on it. Feel free to correct it, for I know it's far fetched; this all might be blarney but, there's no problem in trying to theorize over it, right?
