Street names of the New Silent Hill.

Post by MapDark »

I don't think this would spoil anything so I'm going to put this here.

So! As we know the streets in Silent Hill have a history of aving a meaning behind them.

So I looked at some of the new streets and tried to find the history behind them.

Sagan : Carl Sagan, American astronomer, science writer, and advocate for rationalism and skepticism

Bradbury : Ray Douglas Bradbury (born August 22, 1920) is an American mainstream, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and mystery writer.

Ellroy : James Ellroy (born Lee Earle Ellroy; March 4, 1948) is an American crime writer and essayist

Simmons : Several writers and directors with the last name of Simmons , so I couldn't pick out one , but The writter theme for street names is obvious.

Odier : Daniel Odier (born in 1945 in Geneva ), known by his pseudonym Delacorta, is a Swiss author , screenwriter and poet .

Navidson : Main character in The House of Leaves novel.

Wilson (street right next to hospital ER) : Wilson's disease , heriditary disease that causes the accumulation of copper in blood and tissues.

Shelley : Mary Shelley, English novelist famous for writing Frankenstein and wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley

PLACES
-----------------------

CAldecotte : Caldecotte is a district in the parish of Walton, Milton Keynes, in ceremonial Buckinghamshire that includes the site of an ancient village of the same name. It is also includes the larger part of Caldecotte Lake, an important balancing lake that manages flood water on the River Ouzel just as it enters Milton Keynes. The lake is used by a number of local clubs for rowing and other water sports.

Bryant : not very clear . There is Bryant park in new York.

Millais Park : Sir John Everett Millais, 1st Baronet, PRA (8 June 1829 – 13 August 1896) was an English painter and illustrator and one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Acephale Park : Acéphale (from the Greek a-cephalus, literally "headless") designates both a public review created by Georges Bataille (which numbered five issues, from 1936 to 1939) and a secret and esoteric society formed by Bataille and some other members who had sworn to keep silence. Bataille himself maintained close links with the Surrealist movement in Paris.

Pharos tower : Literally "lighthouse" . They were lighthouse towers built by Romans.

Worcester reserve : Worcester (pronounced /ˈwʊstər/ ( listen) WOOS-tər) is a city and county town of Worcestershire, in the West Midlands of England.

Lazare park : Bernard Lazare, a French literary critic, political journalist, anarchist, and polemist.
Heather Mason , the only girl who will face deadly danger
by going to the mall for hair bleach !!

I think it's pretty kickass how the original Silent Hill had names invoking western horror writers and such, but in this new Silent Hill, most of the names tie into skepticism, crime drama, mystery novels, and basically non-supernatural stuff.

Very true.
I usually don't notice a few until someone points it out.

I have been meaning to read this, and the other one he did - "A Winter Haunting" - this one sounds more like it could have inspired SM. ;)
Only some of my posts are serious.

According to the book of Lost Memories, Wilson refers to author Colin Wilson (in SH1, but SHSM is reusing some of the streets from SH1)

also, here are some copied from my Easter Eggs guide (unfinished), some of the other re-used ones, some info from from: http://silenthillchronicle.cjb.net/ :
********************
Pharos Tower
********************
"Pharos" is Greek for lighthouse, so this is just another
lighthouse reference.

********************
Shelley Rd.
********************
Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. There is also a Frankstein
toy memento that you can get from the machine in the cinema.

********************
Levin St.
********************
Ira Levin. Best known for writing Rosemary's Baby and Stepford Wives.
Levin Street was also an important area in SH1, because it was the
only unlocked house in the first area with the doghouse in front of it.

********************
Matheson St.
********************
Richard Matheson. He is best known for writing I Am Legend and
several episodes of the Twilight Zone.

********************
Bachman Rd.
********************
Richard Bachman was a pen name used by Stephen King.

********************
Navidson St.
********************
Navidson - reference to House of Leaves, which deals with a
family of the same name.

********************
Harris St.
********************
Thomas Harris, author of Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon,
Hannibal, Hannibal Rising.

********************
Sagan St.
********************
Carl Sagan, astronomer and author.

********************
Hawthorne St.
********************
Nathaniel Hawthorne, gothic fiction writer.

********************
Midwich St./Midwich High
********************
Silent Hill 1 had Midwich Elementary and Midwich St.; SHSM has
Midwich High School. These all refer to John Wyndham's novel The
Midwich Cuckoos and its film adaptation, Village of the Damned.
SHSM also has the football team called the Cuckoos as well as a
statue of Wyndham in the center of the school courtyard.

********************
Simmons St.
********************
Dan Simmons, horror/scifi author.

********************
Wilson St.
********************
Colin Wilson, British writer who has written a lot of true crime
and occult-related books.

********************
Craig St.
********************
Lillian Craig Reed, who uses the pseudonym Kit Craig and has
written several psychological thrillers.

I've seen many references in all the SH games. It's part of how I became a fan. Always interesting and it does make me wonder what the new ones will reference.

Bryant is a reference to Edward Bryant:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bryant
"Oh yeah, I've been here before
I can see it with eyes closed
Shadows that look like blood
Dead as far as the mind goes
Fear that comes from my head
Lives in the mirror"
