This may sound like a really stupid question (and I apologise if this topic has already come up) but what's the point behind the "Born from a wish"/Maria bonus game in the director's cut version of Silent Hill 2?

its a bit of added fun AND once you have finished it and start a new game main then you can get the ufo ending :D

The point of Born From A Wish is to display Maria as a semi-- sentient creation of James and Mary, and to introduce Ernest Baldwin and his failed quest to the spectators.

Its to show how maria was 'awakened' after james came to silent hill and how she got to meet him

yeah, not much point, but it adds a few minutes of gameplay and the mansion is cool. =0P

I always wondered how Ernest somehow evaded the monsters. They would have probably broken down his door given enough time, or the acid spitter monsters would have dissolved the door with their acid.
Ever notice how weird it is when
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
Maria opens the door Ernest is behind and no one is there? Does this mean that Ernest was a figment of Maria's imagination, who was also a figment of James's imagination? Kind of creepy once you think about it.

He's dead, He was never alive

Of course he was alive. He's dead now. He's a ghost.

He lived, then he died, and retracted into his Inner World, which was absorbed into Silent Hill's Otherworld to allow Maria and Ernest to have thought to thought communication.

Basically he's a ghost.

How did Ernest know about James though? I didn't really understand that.

I think, by being a ghost in Silent Hill he is connected to the town. Maria is connected to the town too (being created by it) and after being reminded she knows her purpose and who James is.

More gameplay, more explansation and into the mysteries of 'Maria' and expansion of the games mythology/story, more stuff to analyse, etc.

I would also say another point is to introduce the ceremonial items used in the Rebirth ending. To shed a little light on what they will be used for when you get that ending with James.
