James got a letter. From a dead person. Oh dear.

The Significance of Walter's Tomb?

Post by simeonalo »

In the catacombs in Silent Hill 2, underneath the prison, why is there a tomb stone for Walter Sullivan? I didn't find a topic on this. Is there significance to this?

At the time, I interpreted it as James identifying with a murderer on a subconscious level. You know, just another parallel to James' crime.

Now that The Room's been out, I don't know if my views would change.

Walter's grave in the catacombs is to suggest Walter had to undergo the same "trial" w/in the abyss as James, Angela and Eddie, though of course for killing the Locane children.

Indeed. Like James, Angela, and Eddie, Walter felt, on some level, guilt over his actions, and so the Otherworld put him through a harrowing, hellish trial through his own subconscious mind.

^ I'd like to see that included in a future game, maybe.

It doesn't mean anything. Not like the 4th game was being made when 2 was.

True, but ideas could have been floating around... Right?

I'm saying that why is there a tomb if he really isn't significant to the story other than a newspaper article, I'm not implying anything about SH4.

Nah, that'd probably be a bad idea. People keep bitching that the newer games have easy twists to guess, and...well...we KNOW Walter's story. Even if you give him amnesia or cover up his name or something, we can recognize him at a glance, and we know exactly why he's there and what he did. It'd be boring.

Silent Hill 2 was released in 2001. The story for Silent Hill 4: The Room was first written in 2001.

So, yes, they were being made at the same time, or at least immediately after the other.

Walter was "liberated" 3 years before the events of Silent Hill 2.

I always assumed the Walter had a tomb because he was also affected by supernatural forces (The Red Devil) and because he also had taken a (psychological) journey to complete the Ritual.

The Red Devil isn't a supernatural being, it's Walter's nickname for a man who abused him as a child.

^No, the Red Devil was Jimmy Stone. The head of the Valtiel sect and Walter's first victim. Have you played Silent Hill 4? If not, I can understand why you thought that him was another "being".
