James got a letter. From a dead person. Oh dear.

Could be, that was more of the more popular theories. And it makes sence, but at the point James either still didn't remember killing her, or was ignoring that detail. So unless the Apartment was haunted and connected to his mind (As most things in SH are) I'm still not sure he would speak or think of the murder.

as much as I love talking about the smallest details in great depth....

I don't think that when this small whispering sound effect was created that there was THIS much detail and back story for it.

I'll still come up with ideas and such, but you really have to consider it..

To true. But for something like that, noticable but quiet. It's just so tempting to sit down and figure out everything.

If this was one of the other games, I think I'd agree with you. But in Silent Hill 2, everything just has this amazing uncanny ability to serve as a symbol or fit into the story somehow. I think everything is meant to be linked somehow...definitley the whisper too! I think everyone can agree that the 1st part is "Go home, see my dead wife." That in itself is awfully significant foreshadowing. I just heard it yesterday for the 1st time in a loooong time...yay!

Oddish, that's comedic gold right there!

Something along the lines of...

"You love Konami. You love Konami. You cannot live without Konami. Your existence is meaningless without Konami. Buy Konami's fine games like Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid."

Yeah, that sounds about right. :D

After reading this topic, i re-played silent hill 2 just to hear the whispering, I reckon some of you are close to the words the whisper is saying, but might be just confusing it with some other words..
I don't think it says do some laundry... lol

^ I'm pretty sure it says laundry.

Is there no way of slowing it down? This threads almost 4 years old, and we're still none the wiser lol

I can't really make out the words, I'm hearing:
"See my dead wife, come home, do some laundry to ___ see ____ face"
I really can't make out "escape", it sounds something like "do some laundry so seveed me, __ see ___'s face"
I'm really not sure what that word is, but I'm pretty sure it's not "escape", and I'm hearing "me" after it as well..
I slowed it down and made it sound lower so I could hear it a little better, but I still can't make out the words.
Do you guys really hear "do some laundry to escape, see [undecipherable name]'s face" ?

Here's the slower/deeper version of The Adversary's sample (put it inside a flash for easier uploading on imageshack and so I could add text):
http://img293.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... permp1.swf

EDIT: I can also make out "car" somewhere before "'s face"
More like:
"See my dead wife, then come home, put some laundry to seveed me, did see du car setives some s__ace"
Italic words are gibberish or words I think I made out..
I'm pretty sure 's__ace' is not "space".
I'm also hearing 'put' instead of 'do' before 'some laundry'..
"Put some laundry to .... me"
I also think the "did see" I'm hearing could be a single word, but I'm not sure..
And the gibberish "to seveed me" could also be interpreted as "___ evening"
"Dead wife" could also be "damn wife", I really can't tell :P
Here's an even slower sample so you can hear it more clearly:

Gah, I'm going nuts over this
I can't die happily before figuring this out
This guy slowed it down a few pages back. I have saved MMY's upload of it, and I am going to have a mess about with it later on Sound Forge and Acid Pro.

Gotta love ACID pro, it's one of my favorite DAW's! way more flexible than pro tools... although I did use PT to record the whispering

That is truly creepy, I have never heard it before. Must have played SH2 at least 7 times and have never got the game to do that for me. Thanks for the info and the link to the sound clip! :D

That's creepy as hell, but when I heard it in the game I just took it for an ambient sound.

It sounds like it may have some kind of added audio effect on it...some kind of light reverb or delay maybe. It seems like there's something more to this than it merely being random gibberish, because many of us are hearing the "see my dead wife" part. (I am open to the idea that I'm just hearing it because you guys said it's what you heard). But due to its positioning near your first boss fight and the fact that it doesn't repeat anywhere else in the game I think there's something to it.

Reminds me a bit of Goblin's soundtrack to Suspiria (which of course means "sighs"...). In the soundtrack, you can hear a sinister, nearly whispered voice going "la la la la" through some of it, and at other moments you'll hear a whispered exclamation of "witch!".

Creepy stuff indeed.

Phantom words phenomenon...

Our brain is hardwired to notice patterns, see faces and hear words, it will do that even though there are none.

I believe its gibberish, and you guy are only hearing the “see my dead wife” bit because that sentence makes sense to be there, but not because you really hear it.

I believe this also rationally explains the EVP, but that’s another story.

I love this! I am on my second playthrough of SH2, this time on PC, and the whisper really took me by surprise, because I didn't hear it first time.

Awesome - the games take you by surprise even after having finished them!
