headphones

Post by dizzy »

i recently got a new tv with a headphone jack, so of course the first thing i did was turn off the lights, turn the volume way up, put on my head phones and played silent hill 2. i knew about the whispering in the apartments but intil i played with the headphones on id NEVER heard it in the game after 10+ times playing thru. so i was just wondering: has anyone else gone thru the game with headphones and is there anyhting else to listen for that might have been missed without them on.
i cant wait til i get to the prison bathroom with the volume all the way up...

That depends a lot of your TV. If you have good one, with good sounds games would propably works better or same kind of way than with headphones.

This is courtesy of Conquerer who wrote an entire FAQ on the game. He did a fantastic job. So I pulled out some pieces from it and you can print this and use it as you play. Keep in mind some of it is stupid shit, but I'll leave that up to you. Enjoy.

EDIT: I received permission.

-In Room 209 2F, you can hear some whispers, but they are very hard to
understand*
-You can hear someone running by when you run past Room 207 2F sometimes,
by the water near the locked apartment stairway where you fight Pyramid
Head*
-In the same area on 2F you can also hear a doorknob turning*

-Mary says "James, why did you kill me?" when he first finds the radio
-The first time you meet Eddie (when he is puking in the toilet) use
headphones--it sounds real, and for some people, disgusting*
-When you cross to Blue Creek Apartments from the Emergency Exit door,
listen to James’ hands when he grabs onto the window with both hands*

-On RF, when you examine the old fence where PH knocks you off, it sounds
sweet!*
-There are AMAZING sound effects when Pyramid Head knocks James off the
Hospital rooftop*
-After you beat the Hangers boss, listen to the siren; it sounds amazing*
-When you try to exit room C2 1F you can hear glass shattering*
-When you enter room S3 3F when Maria is gone, you can hear someone
breathing like they're watching you*
-On your way to the Silent Hill Historical Society, you can make it so
when you're running, you step on the grass and then the next step on the
pavement and it sounds cool (try to continuously do it)*
-There is a weird sound when you walk by the first door on the right after
you come out of the well*
-The invisible monsters in the prison are saying "ritual", and when you
listen to it backwards, it says "are you sure"
-When you try to go through the broken-locked door beside the elevator
(long ride) before you go down, it sounds sweet!*
-When you first enter the Thinner elevator on B1F, you can hear heavy
breathing*
-You can hear someone sobbing in the west 2F corridor*

You can't really hear it say that. It's distorted & layered with static so the outcome isn't obvious that early in the game.

. . . AND THAT'S THAT.

I know, I kept replaying the game for that part over and over again and I didn't hear it. But maybe someone else might.

Relevant anecdote:

One time I was playing Silent Hill 2 with headphones on and the lights off. My old man came in to say goodnight. I jumped about three feet into the ground.

SH is the only series I play with headphones.
For the same reason, to hear all the little things we don't hear when playing without them.

That's my problem: my sound sucks hardcore on my crappy tv, and I sit too far away for headphones xD I wondered why I've never heard the voices (I know it's predetermined and might not occur but...I've been through that part quite a few times).

I'll have to get some surround sound someday...:/

Get wireless headphones (cheaper than SSS)! And I know what you mean about the randomness of sounds. On one of my many playthru's of SH2; I finally heard the see my dead wife...blah blah blah...(undecipherable name) sound IN THE GAME. Before that I only heard it here in one of the threads.

I actually prefer to play the SHs with headphones - there are just so many ambient sound effects that add to the experience. I can't even really put names to all of them - squeks and bangs, mostly.

That Silent Hill Media site has folders of effects ripped from the PC versions, 2 and 3, I think.

Keep in mind, some of the sounds are random...you don't always hear them everytime you play thru.

After you first attempt to get to the third floor of the Hotel that is blocked off by bars, you can hear Mary in the distance yell "James!" after you retreat away from the bars.

EDIT: I just listened to the garbled radio and I could definitely hear Mary ask "Why did you kill me?" at the very end.

Is there some whisper too, when you use that fire-escape way in Blue Creek's to Woodside?
