Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition

Post by Numinex »

Have any of you played modded Silent Hill 2 yet?

http://www.enhanced.townofsilenthill.com/SH2/

I replayed it twice several months ago, after installing all available enhancements. Game looks and runs significantly better and it's basically as close as we can get to original PS2 version in terms graphics and sound quality (aside from resolution, of course).

Furthermore, there is another update on it's way, which will itroduce proper, soft shadows - for the first time since release of the PC port:

I'm really looking forward to this - there will be another reason to replay this game again :)

I've wanted to try this out but I unfortunately don't have a PC copy of Silent Hill 2.

My PC copy's up in the attic with the rest of my SH collection so I can't play it either, but it's a fantastic project and one we should all support!

Fortunately I still have my 3CD BIG BOX so I installed it easily :) It seems they fixed almost every issue that PC version had. Shame it's really hard to find a copy of SH2 right now and most likely we will never get a digital release....

It's been really great to catch tid-bits of info on their updates as they continue to work on this.
It will make it much easier to play in the future.

Installed SH2 on my desktop, after realizing my last install was on a laptop close to 8 years ago. Forgot how rough it was trying to play it with mouse and keyboard. Haven't gotten around to trying the game again with the enhanced edition updates, but did install it back in the fall. Should get around to updating it again and giving it a proper run.

New update is finally available :) I'm getting ready to work so I don't have much time right now, so I only checked hospital and prison for couple minutes- I can't believe how amazing this game looks right now!

Would you guys say this is worth it to try for someone who typically plays on the playstation? I've been on the fence about whether to bother installing it.

My PS2 and copy of SH2 is back with my parents in another city, so I got SH2 for PC and installed all of the enhancements. I can't praise the people who created them enough, they really make the game even more special.

Playing on a keyboard took me a while to get used to, but it makes encounters more intense because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Also, I find myself taking the time to walk around town more and explore because everything looks much better. Just a few minutes ago when I was playing, I ran past the Historical Society instead of going directly inside, and found a corpse with a map beside him that you can observe. I have NEVER seen that before, and I've completed this game a dozen times.

Pick it up if you can, it gets my golden stamp of approval.

Yes! :)

For the first time since it's release in 2002, PC version can be compared with PS2 original. I replayed it yesterday with newest update and still can't believe how much work they put into it. Silent Hill 2 looks incredible with proper shadow and lighting system and this is just the tip of the iceberg. You can see how much has changed if you look on the first update videos, when they started with fixing fog effects and some minor glitches.

I really wish I had the PC version to try this. Although I just had an interesting experience, somewhat related.

I have never touched the HD collection until now. It was on sale for $7 so I said “screw it”. My girlfriend and I had JUST finished playing through Silent Hill 2 PS2. I decided to launch right into the SH2 on the HD collection to directly compare. Did they... fix it or something?

I remember all the backlash when it came out. But aside from the fog looking lame in the very beginning, and the boat part, it all honestly looked and played very good. I experienced zero glitches. Graphical, musical, gameplay. Nothing. Literally just those two spots where it didn’t look amazing. I never would have noticed the roads look cleaner on the HD version if I hadn’t read it. I stuck with the original actors after trying the new ones and not loving it. I’ll see how SH3 fares. (I also JUST played on PS2. We’re in a SH mood).

Am I crazy, or did they fix a LOT? I finished SH2 a day before on PS2, so it should have been obvious. All I know is it was worth the $7 and I wasn’t expecting it to be. I played on the Xbox One X, by the way.

Silent Hill 2 was always the one that worked better in the HD collection. Are you playing Xbox or PS3? I know that one of them got a patch but the other didn't.

The HD Collection got a patch (on PS3, at least) that fixed the most glaring issues. It's still not perfect and the fix sometimes causes new issues (though my instance of blue fog in SH3 doesn't seem to be common), but most of the immediate visual bugs due to a lack of log were fixed by adding in more fog.

A lot of the issues still present are the ones that will bug more hardcore fans and I still say PS2 is the best way to play (or perhaps PC now with the Enhanced Edition, still haven't tried it) but the HD Collection is sometimes made to sound worse than it actually is. It's still worth playing if there's no other way to play.

I played on Xbox One X. Again, right after playing the PS2 version upscaled beautifully for comparison. Aside from a couple minor graphical issues (fog in the beginning and during the rowboat scene) HD collection version was f—king awesome.

For the most part, however, I’ve heard 3 was better than 2 in the HD collection. Curious. I’ll definitely let you guys know my thoughts, as I have also just replayed 3 on PS2.

EDIT: SH 3 was fine, but definitely a lot rougher. It was still just weird little graphical problems but it was a good amount more. A handful vs just the couple from SH2 HD. That and with 3 the lip syncing is occasionally not even close. Not to mention still butt hurt about that inability to hear the original voice actors. Otherwise fine, though the PS2 version is VASTLY superior. In my experience, SH 2 HD was a-ok except for some fog stuff in the beginning and on the boat.
