Is Silent Hill 2 Really as Bad as They Say?

James got a letter. From a dead person. Oh dear.

it gets a lot of flak because its story is simply awful. I mean come one, the dude has that big sword that is too heavy to lift, and he's supposed to be scary? and how can he see through his stupid mask?

Also, how come James doesn't even try to seduce Maria? And why is the town foggy when it's clearly summer?

Nothing makes sense. It pisses me off, just talking about it.

1. Pyramid Head is scary because he's unstoppable, terrifyingly inhuman, and sexually degenerate. And mask or no, he can see you just fine.

2. James wants Mary. And on some level, he knows Maria ain't frickin' real. In one of the endings, he DOES try to seduce her: he still knows she isn't real, he just doesn't care anymore.

3. It isn't summer, or anything else, where they are.

4. This is Silent Hill. It isn't supposed to make sense. If it made sense, it would be far less scary.

SH 2 isn't as bad as some people say, it's actually a lot worse. The logic in puzzles is complete baffling and honestly who did the creature design? Completely without features, whats up with that? The sound and music design is outright terrible and don't forget the bland and lifeless atmosphere. Walking for minutes without any clear purpose or goal. I cant remember how many times I walked in a street which was actually broken off (lame, probably thought we couldnt figure that was because of low budgets) so I had to backtrack and was forced to use that awful map to determine where I was and what way I should go. What is this? Boy scout simulator? And don't forget this was around the same time Grand Theft Auto 3 was released, so navigation via minimap could be implemented.

It's a God's miracle Konami saw any future for the series after this fiasco, lucky that they did otherwise we would have missed out on A LOT of genuine good quality Silent Hill experience.

A lot of the things you are complaining about, such as disorientation, confusion, and changes to the world that don't make a lot of sense, are actually an integral part of the Silent Hill experience (just like the bizarre sounds, freakish and disgusting-looking monsters, and disturbing locations). You're not supposed to have a clear indication of where you are or where you're going. If it weren't for the fact that it would make the game too hard and frustrating for the everyday gamer, they might have even made it impossible to determine your position and orientation: you would have to use the map and what landmarks were on it to figure out where you were and which way you were going.

SH2 was definitely a low point for the series.
There was no otherworld in it, there were only four monsters, and there's no Mary Elizabeth on the soundtrack at all!

I mean, it's playable, but a chore. Silly story and goofy characters make it even harder to get through.

^Totally agreed. They couldn't even get Pyramid Head right! At least Homecoming came along to save the series. Now THAT'S what a Silent Hill game should be like, am I right?

wtf guys are you serious????????

Silent Hill 2 is, in opinion of many gamers, the best HORROR GAME of all time, LOL.

You guys are comparing the battle system of the game with the battle system of the new games. Well, you guys should know that SH2 were made in 2000's... There wasn't many resources to make a better battle situation...

The monsters were amazing, the soundtrack were amazing, the HISTORY were the best I've ever seen in a game...

Silent Hill 2 has a SAD history... But, is one of the BEST GAMES I'VE EVER played, by far.

^ All of the reviewers were paid by Konami itself. That's why the game got such great scores.

...

What's with the opening cut-scene anyway? Always thought it was quite stupid.
James looking at the mirror and doing a litte gurn. You have some serious situation going on (letter from a DEAD wife wtf) and the guy is messing around. He even leaves the door of his car wide fucking open for God's sake.

Don't even get me started about Eddie's pizza. I just pictured Cynthia from SH4 looking at the pizza in Eddie's pants and saying something along the lines of "I'll try that... Special flavour of you later." Disgusting!

Yeah, its easier to say that it were bought by Konami, than saying that it was because the game is one of the best games we've ever seen...
With such a excelent history/soundtrack ...

So why didn't Konami Bought the websites that were saying Downpour/Homecoming/The Room/Origins were bad games??

What always bothered me was James's complete lack of muscular definition.

Image

I mean, yeah, he's not bad, but how am I supposed to believe all of the slash fiction between him and Pyramid Head, most notably their night of handball after a chance meeting at Arby's, when Mr. Triangle can heft all that rusty iron and James gets all huff-puff after running two blocks?

Maybe I was expecting too much, thinking he'd be like Marcus Fenix or Jonathan Joestar, but does he really have to be that frail? It really took me out of the immersion.

I mean, how can I believe I'm James when he looks like he only benches the bar?

Do you know what I really hated about the game?? No weapon upgrade... HAving the same lame guns alone all the game was so tedious...

I found it lacking it didn't have cheat codes or pre-order DLC.

Well, technically, the shotgun in the second episode and the hunting rifle in the third were weapon upgrades of sorts. However, the rifle is pretty dismal. When I play, I usually take only the wooden plank, the pistol, and the shotgun. Everything else just clogs up my inventory, plus it's hard to role-play James walking along with 20 pounds of guns, a 12-pound pipe, and a 70-pound great knife.

The selection of guns in "Origins" was much better. I especially liked the assault rifle; wish SH2 had had that instead of the hunting gun. Or maybe a Tommy gun.
