James got a letter. From a dead person. Oh dear.

Lakeview Hotel = Stanley Hotel?

It's not a 100% precise twin, but the resemblance is undeniable:

To the six of you who don't know, the Stanley Hotel inspired the Overlook Hotel of The Shining, and featured in the miniseries remake in 1997.

There is definitely a strong resemblance there. The colors are the same, and the structure is very similar. Nice eye. I would say it's very possible that this was intended, since The Shining is a very popular horror movie. I

Nice find, that would make it the second reference to The Shining in a Silent Hill game.

I can't believe I never connected that even after visiting the real-life Stanley Hotel. They do look similar in design.

Yeah, I noticed that yeaterday when I was doing my second playthrough. There was a picture of the hotel hanging in the hotel...wierd, and I looked at it and said "hey, that looks like the Stanley!!!!" And yes I do talk to myself, :0 Oh I mean I was talking to James. He probably rolled his eyes and said "Oh brother...." XD
You shut your mouth when you're talkin' to me!!!!

Wait which one is that in the picture? The picture says it's in the SH2 directory but i would assume there would not be a point in showing the hotel we all know from the game...?
I can't believe i earned 10 Silent Hill cash for this.

^I guess for those who have never played the game, and for those who feel the need to go to google, type in "Stanley Hotel" and compare them through two different tabs. Seems logical to me.

^Oh, ok. Well i guess it kind of looks like a really poor man's Stanley hotel now that i've seen it. Without the wings and shit.

There was a second photo, of the Stanley, that seems to have broken. I replaced it.

The two are not twins. The Lakeview is smaller and less ornate. First cousins, perhaps.

Very cool. I wouldn't be surprised if Team Silent got the inspiration for Lakeview from the Stanley Hotel.
Quiet stairway. Rusted elevator. Darkness. White dress. Joy.

That is the front door to Heaven's Night, by the way.

Very nice! I never noticed probably because I'm not very familiar with the appearance of the Stanley Hotel.

There was REDRUM painted on a wall in Silent Hill 1 I think.

Same poster is also on the road into silent hill, on one of the wooden fences after the cemetery and toward the Silent Hill Farms area. I never even noticed the Heaven's Night ones.

As for the Stanley, damn. I knew it reminded me of something! I haven't watched that in forever though. ^_^

Well, it would actually be a reference to the book or miniseries. The incarnation of the Overlook hotel in the popular movie is nothing like this.

Although honestly, I wouldn't really call this a reference to The Shining at all. It's neat, and it's very possible they used the Stanley hotel as a bit of inspiration even (although I am sure there are other hotels that look similar as well), but that doesn't really make it a Shining reference specifically. It's not on the same level as, say, a torn up movie poster specifically for the movie.

True dat, but the fact that a similar hotel (to the miniseries) appears in the same game with a poster (for the Kubrick film) does seem like both are tied in, and just another Stephen King reference, since there were already so many King references (in SH1, at least, not so much in SH2).

Nice find Ryan. I just recently watched The Shining again but since I forgot what Lakeview Hotel looked like so I didn't make any connection.
The maze in The Shining could also have inspired the maze in Silent Hill 2. The way Nicholson's character drags his leg around can be compared with Pyramid Head.
