James got a letter. From a dead person. Oh dear.

Yep. He's even referred to as "Dr. Singer" at one point in the film IIRC.

Wasn't Jacob Singer a philosopher?

I mean, the chiropractor said something in the line: "You philosophers have figured out the world, but telling left from right is too difficult."

So yes, he studied and he has a degree, but the war left too much of a mental scar on him. Like he said: "I wanted to do something where I wouldn't have to think anymore."

The duality always reminded me of Elfen Lied with Lucy and Nyuu. Totally different personalities, but they look almost exactly alike. (well, except for the eyes...)

People should watch david lynch's "lost highway" reminds me a lot of silent hill 2, especially the mary/maria thing.
"The Lost Highway is a story depicted through the mind of a man who can not accept what he has done, and as a result who he is. The brutal murder of his wife is proof that Fred Madison is a seriously deranged man. It is this sort of insanity that allows Fred to not only kill a human being, but then to enter a state of denial as a way to escape reality... or at least try to.

As Fred Madison explains, he hates video cameras because he " likes to remember things [his] own way ... He remembers how he wants to remember, not necessarily how it happened". As a result, Fred must somehow exist in two worlds. Physically, he has no choice but to live in reality. However, in his mind he experiences the world as he wishes to remember it. Because he cannot accept reality, he chooses to live within this "new identity" in his mind... the result of which creates a dual identity. Within this new identity, Fred creates a world that he can control. He thus attempts to recreate his past in a way that he can accept. "

"Alice Wakefield (AW) - Alice symbolized Fred's Temptation. More specifically, his temptation to kill his wife, Renee. Alice was very closely related to the Mystery Man in the same way that one's emotions tend to lead them towards temptation"

Alone. Yes, that's the key word, the most awful word in the English tongue. Murder doesn't hold a candle to it and hell is only a poor synonym.

I'm pretty sure Lost Highway being an inspiration to Silent Hill 2 is a fact. It's probably written somewhere.

@ LennethValkyrie: Interesting hypothesis and definitely possible. I rate it.
@ anyone who wants to know: James Sunderland wears an M-1965 field jacket, which would have been standard issue during 'Nam.

Very nice catch. I didn't even notice while watching Metropolis. Now I feel like an idiot. But then again, I wasn't really watching Metropolis expecting to see SH inspiration either, lol. I did always think that Mary's clothes looked a little old lady for how young she was and for the time period.
