I searched and didn't find this anywhere else, but I remember in the Reverse Hospital there was a room with an empty bird cage inside. The room here was Silent (irony) , but when you entered a similar room in Nowhere, you could hear a bird flapping it's wings in the room. The creepy part was that there was no bird. This scared the shit out of me the first time, and I was just wondering if a bird/bird cage has any deeper meaning in Silent Hill? I haven't seen any related things to a bird, so was wondering if anyone had any theories.

If there is actually a connection, I'd say it means something along these lines:

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou
Bird in a cage has finally escaped (Alessa trapped and now creating her own world)
Bird was trapped in a cage for so long that it became a ghost (also sort of like Alessa)

i think it represents the fact that alessa was trapped in the hospital for so long.

I don't think it represents anything actually, I think it's just a clever way to scare people and make them think there should be a deeper meaning in an empty bird cage.

Like many things in Silent Hill, the meaning is left for you to fill in. This is the genius of the game.

I think you hit the nail on the head there.

harry knows that cheryl is in silent hill, but doesnt see her
perhaps the bird signifies the presence of cheryl (alessa) or anything
but its not seen only heard (since birds dont write letters or clues)
it seems to signal alessa being caged, but has found release thru her subconscious mind, which silent hill reovolves around seemingly

I am sure that it once held a bird of a paitent. But now the bird flies free. If you recall when you go in there, you hear the flutter of wings.
It could be symbolic of something, but I don't got the faintist...

just saw Jacob's Ladder yesterday and they had a scene with birds and a birdcage. Maybe the game was paying homage...

i think the clue lies in the fact that, when in the hospital, there is no sound. why is this? well, think about alessa. where is she at this point? she's out and about, creating the seal, no longer trapped in the hospital. alessa made this nightmare and this metaphor too. when alessa is bound to dahlia towards the end of the game, she is once again trapped. and her metaphor changes accordingly. the bird is trapped again. such is the nature of nowhere, a claustrophobic environment composed only of alessas memories and resentments.

im pretty sure thats exactly it.

Yes, but I would add "too fill in or not to fill in." ^_^

I'm of the opinion that it probably doesn't mean much.

but the interprtations are narrowed down
some things are factual, therefore creating a blockade to unnescessary theories that could be irrelevant.

I always thought that the bird wasn't even in the cage, but somewhere in the dark corner of the room because, the sound of the bird (to me) sounded like it wasn't coming from the cage.

yeah it was in the cage( the sound i mean) but i thought that it was somewhere in the room too. until i clearly checked every corner, and i came to the conclusion it was symbolic, or just a creep factor, but creep factors are there to be read into and discussed

^^^ I suppose so. I too had a quick glance around the room and couldn't find it, but since it wasn't in the cage i just thought 'must be in the room somewhere'. Never once crossed my mind that it was a ghost or something lol.

From the sound of the fluttering of the wings, it seemed to me that the bird (if it had been there) was trapped in the cage. It wasn't just a normal, relaxed flapping of wings as if the bird were flying. It sounded as if it were struggling, and trapped. So it didn't cross my mind that the bird was elsewhere in the room.
