Monster Symbolism

Maybe it's me, but I found it ironic that the straightjacket monster appeared after Cybil handcuffed Rose. Maybe it has nothing to do with that.
To me, the janitor symbolizes Voldo.
And Pyramid Head symbolized Mortal Kombat.... "Fatality"
Don't mind me, I enjoy being silly.

I have a few ideas on the monsters..so im gonna throw in me .233243432432 cents.
Gray Children: Like most others, I feel that these represent Rose's classmates who picked on her. I had an interesting thought about them as well. In the movie they never really hurt Rose, they are just reaching out to her, grabbing her. Now this is just totally just a thought, but looking back at it, maybe they (the gray children) were reaching out/grabbing at Rose because she was a mother figure. Once again just a thought. I like the idea of kill demon children better.
Lying Figure: I really like the theory behind one of the previous posters that they represented Alessa in her burnt body. I also thought that maybe they represented those who were burnt as witches throughout Silent Hills past, Alessa couldnt have been the first. Perhaps this is why they were able to walk in the Fog world, because they were once people who were apart of the community perhaps even the church.
Nurses: I read somewhere that the nurses (with they're "beautiful" bodies) represented what Alessa (now badly burnt) could never have. I do not agree with this theory at all. I think the nurses are there because they became such a common thing in her life. They would try and help her, but couldn't. Sometimes hurting her more when they were just trying to help.
Janitor: Well we all know his story and why he is there. Doesn't really need another statement explaining the obvious
Roaches: All of the other evil people and sinners in Silent Hill that did not have a direct impact on Alessa.
Pyramid Head: I am quite torn as to whether or not I think P-Head was controlled by Alessa. Im gonna tie in some SH2 and stay with the thought that he was an exicuitioner and punisher in Silent Hills past. Knowing this (perhaps she learned it in school) Alessa conjours a demon resembling this dark figure of Silent Hills past to hunt down those Alessa has a special intrest in.
Some of these are just speculation, and I dont't think of them to be the "right" way to look at the creatures. I really like (and believe) some of the of theories I have read, im just throwing a thought I had about them.

Even though thats a theory its good. I could not figure out why ph was in the movie... to me he made no sence at all and i thought gans put him in the movie just to scare people.
But the way you explain it makes so much more sence.
oO?

I'm not saying its wrong or stupid to theorize about it, but I have a feeling a lot of that has been going on.
Meh, Pyramid Head wasn't trying to kill squat. Was trying to scare them at best.
Proof? He rapes the steel door with his knife, he rapes the hell out of that steel door. Then he uses his knife to Goatse the steel door with his knife.
Then, instead of using the same knife to cut the steel bar in half, he sticks it in the wall and pretends to go apeshit trying to lift a bar that would have required him pulling it over and past the hole his arm was through, in order to open the door.
He wasn't trying too hard to actually get in there.

That's actually kinda cool. I never thought that PH could have been something Alessa learnt about. I now have a picture in my head about a class learning about executions and torturors of the 'wicked'.Pyramid Head: I am quite torn as to whether or not I think P-Head was controlled by Alessa. I still think he's symbolic of more than just avenger/looks cool. In a movie where everything is symbolic of something, you really can't just have something thrown in.
I'm new here so my 1 scents might not be worth crap but did Alessa really need PH to punish the people (To me he was nothing more then a punisher) As seen several times in the movie the Reaper/dark Alessa/Demon with many names can move around the fog world freely. When Rose and Cybil meet Anna they come across Alessa Dark side, the dark side could have killed Anna right there. Furthermore in the school when Dark Alessa was there and she could have killed the 3 Towns people there. So does Dark Alessa have no true power or does she have another agenda. Because it seems that the P-Head wasn't that usefull.
One more note: My thereoy my not be that great cause I never played any silent hill before (getting sh2 tomorrow) so be merciful.

I just find it funny that he was able to punch through a steel door with his knife and jerk it back and forth, but he couldn't bend a metal bar. That bothered me.kisho wrote:Meh, Pyramid Head wasn't trying to kill squat. Was trying to scare them at best.

That and the fact that they went to Brookhaven hospital instead of Alchemilia (sp?), which is where she was int he game.
I'm offended by political correctness.
Yeah, I knew that--but I now remember seeing the name at the top. Didn't really pick up on that before. The map that Rose memorized said "Brookhaven Hospital" on it. In the game, Alessa was kept in Alchemelia.
Well, it's not like we went on a 3-page tangent about it like some things do...Also, this board is for postings of monster symbolism. I think extended talk about the hospital's name is a little off-topic

Understood, but please stay on topic. It's too easy to side track once it gets going, thanks.

The little crazy baby creatures in the beginning creeped me the hell out but from what I've seen, I'm guessing its Alessa's representation of her scarred body after the fire. You guys did say those things were the kids that made fun of Alessa when she was in school, but they all looked alike and had the same size and disembodiment(From what I remember anyways).
I thought the no-arms monster was a symbolic representation of Rose handcuffed. They did appear a little after Cybil realised they were in deep shizza. Maybe Alessa was looking from afar and saw Rose get cuffed by the police and needed a representation of what was going on? And the black goo that was spat out of the creature...what happens when your really upset at somebody? You spit at them. When people get caught by the police, handcuffed, they sometimes spit at the police officer.
The Janitor...well, he deserved what he got. And I just remembered he was chained up with Barbed wire as punishment...just like in the end when Alessa got all 'Hellraiser' like.
The Nurses I'm still speculating it was all just rapid manifestation of just one kind of nurse. There is no way Silent Hill had all those (And don't think I'm a sicko for saying this) perfectly built nurses working in the same Hospital. Just like the crazy Demon-Children in the beginning and the No-Arms, the nurses were representation of one thing, and it may have been the Nurse that took care of Alessa when she was in the Hospital.
As for the Nurse herself with her eyes white and diluted(I think that is the right word), think back at the nurses. Their faces are plain but with no eyes, noses, ears, mouths... There's a connection from what the Red Nurse can't see and the Nurses that can't do either. Maybe it's the fact in Alessa's mind that the Red Nurse did not like seeing Alessa's body(She says something about the Nurse's curiosity and Alessa taking it out on her) and the other nurses that worked there did not do their part in making Alessa comfortable. Pretty much like "A name with no face" But then you'd have to rule out the fact that they all pretty much had the same figure.
As for Pyramid Head himself and the roaches, I say he is just there as sort of a Guardian or 'Equilizer' of the Dark Realm. He was there in its beginning, with or without Alessa. If you go in part that there are three dimensions, the "Reality", the "Purgatory", and the "Hell", whoever is in control of the temporary Hell, which is Alessa, has to have a guardian or somebody that protects the owner's 'interests'. When the poor girl got skinned by PH, Alessa's true mother almost looked as if she summoned the creature herself but no harm came to her. PH is like a Watchdog of Hell. He is neither Good nor Evil. He just is.
Oh yeah and the roaches themselves. Well, they did attack the dudes in the Mining Suits. And they were controlled by PH, so it could be they were the unfortunate citizens who were burned in the fire and did not like the aspect of Silent Hill controlled by a bunch of religious fanatics. Coarse, there were over a billion of these cockroach things so you can just forget that the people of Silent Hill were all of them...maybe just some of them.
And that is my five...six..Around six cents.

I also noticed that the Straightjacket Monsters were only around after Rose was handcuffed. I think it has dual symbolism of being a prisoner. Rose as a prisoner handcuffed and losing control of her situation. Alessa as a prisoner trapped in her body in an endless nightmare.
PH does not work for Alessa directly. PH works for the demon that appears in the movie as "Dark Alessa." When Alessa agreed to make a pact with the demon, she also gained the help of the demon's minion, PH, to help her get her revenge. Think of him as a punisher mercenary in the movie. Following orders from Alessa 'cuz his boss sold him out.

I personally interpreted that Pyramid head was sort of an already pre-existing demon that roams Hellish Silent Hill in the movie adaptation outside of Alessa's influence (other than the fact he seems afraid of daylight)...which is why he was kicking the roaches out of his way when he stole their dinner (a miner's corpse) and they couldn't touch him. Seeing as the lesser monsters could harm each other (scene where the nurses slaughter each other, and PH cuts a roach in half) but they seemed below Pyramid head's status... well, I kind of thought that was because they were only recently turned to monsters compared to PH. But that's just how I saw it...
