ASSUME is the right word here. But what about the vanishing wet floor- first you see it wet (mum comes out of the basement), then it's not.. later it is again? It doesn't automatically go to hard after a first playthrough. It'll stay on normal. You'll have to start a new game save on hard to play in hard.
