SHSM is completely different and not a part of the established timeline. You'll be missing a chunk of information by skipping SH1.

I'd say go into SM as if it were a completely different game. Don't look at it as a remake, but a remix. It's on it's own timeline, too, so nothing changed in SM will affect the canon of the other games.
